To golf like Tiger, your handicap score needs to be under +13. That’s right, Tiger at times has had a handicap score up to +13. But there are just a few things that have to be taken into consideration. To begin with, to play golf like Tiger, you have to have nerves of iron. How many times have you played in a tournament in front of thousands of live spectators, and millions of people around the world, on a course you seldom play?
There are not many athletes that can take over the sport in which they play, so it’s a safe bet that Tiger is in a class of his own, and there’s not much chance to find anyone like him. But you can improve your game, no matter what level you are at, and get that handicap down. If you play regularly at your neighborhood course, a handicap between +6 to +12 is very respectable.
One problem that many golfers have is that they concentrate too much on their drive off the tee. It’s nice to hit a good tee shot, but that’s only the start. The short game has to have much more focus. And what if your drives are not very impressive? Do you just give up? To begin with, most of us took up golf because it’s fun. Stop trying to be the next Tiger, and just have fun. That makes you more relaxed, and your game will show.
If your drives are not going very well, there’s a good chance that it’s a minor problem that can be corrected. You need to create the proper tempo for your swing. You’ll get all kinds of help from friends with your swing, but that doesn’t always work. In fact, it can make matters worst. You can get so confused, that you can’t hit the ball at all. Talk about frustration!
When I was having problems with my fairway shots, which I rarely had problems with, my brother watched me and said just a couple of words. He was the only person that ever really helped me, with getting my swing back. What was it? All he said was “Your Tempo.” He didn’t get on me about how bad I was swinging or anything. With those two words, I was able to correct my swing within five holes. And I didn’t pay an instructor for it again.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone just say a few words, and Poof, your swing is back. But that was a rare case, we were just playing a fun weekend round, with no pressure. I was relaxed and playing with my brothers, not in one of the league tournaments we played every few weeks. It’s important to work on your all around game, and that begins with your swing tempo. From your drive to every putt. The swing is where it is at.
I’ve been a golfer for more than 25 years and went to the school of hard knocks when it comes to golf. Today you don’t have to go about improving your game on your own, or by paying high fees, as I did, to a golf instructor. You can now do what the pro’s do to stay on top of their game.
